Su's Marine Biology essay

Homework question:
Describe the significance of the Challenger expedition and the variety of endeavors the Marine Scientists now undertake.

Humankind has been given a burden responsibility to explore, understand and therefore protect the planet earth we are living on. Many branches of science have been created to fulfill this task, and the one that has drawn so much attention from the scientists for its significance is the study of marine biology. The variety of endeavors that marine biologists are now undertaking has made this branch of science a fast growing one.

Above all, scientists are studying the marine life just for the sake of knowledge itself. They are thriving every single day, doing researches, making observations in the hope of having thorough knowledge of this mysterious and enigmatic world.  Marine biologists want to know exactly the number of species hiding in the oceans that covers nearly 71% of the earth’s surface. They are also trying to connect the web of life, to understand how one marine species interacts with another or with the environment and to answer the questions that have not been answered.  That goal of someday having a complete encyclopedia of the sea for the later generations to know how wonderful and complicated the marine world is has been keeping scientists working tirelessly every day.

Looking into the marine biology in depth, we can see that there are a lot more goals that scientists are trying to undertake. First, they want to be able to predict the wraths of nature in advance before it is too late. Now and then, there are news about natural disasters that have taken the lives of many innocent people.  That includes but not limited to ENSO, tsunami, tidal waves, typhoon, flood…etc. Since the oceans act as enormous solar-powered engines that drive the various weather patterns affecting terrestrial environments, marine biologists, along with oceanographers, work together to prevent as much damage as they can. Had marine laboratories been equipped with enough hi-tech technologies, the recent tsunamis in Japan and Indonesia would not have been as devastating as it was.

Secondly, the underwater living organisms can be a rich source of food for all the other species, especially humankind.  Not only will those foods be nutritious, but they will also be playing a great part in some countries’ economy for their high commercial value. Although there are some industrialized nations, some countries still depend largely on the amount of fishes and products from sea organisms, such as my home country, Vietnam. Therefore, marine biologists are also thriving to have as much information about the types of fish, what food they feed on, which environment they can grow best… to help the hard working but still very impecunious peasants.

Moreover, scientists try their best to preserve the already wonderful and resourceful oceans that we have. We affect the marine world every day, whether we are aware of it or not. For example, a marine organism named Pfiesteria usually feed harmlessly on algae. By releasing waste material into the river where that specie lives, we created a sudden increase in nutrient concentration, therefore create an impetus in the organism and turn it into a carnivore. During the carnivorous stage, Pfiesteria emits a toxin that stuns a lot of fishes and then feed on them. That is just a small example of why marine biologists try to achieve the goal of protecting the underwater environment.

To achieve those various goals, scientists have made a lot of efforts. One of the most significant effort to get a better understanding of the marine life is that of the “Challenger expedition”.  The expedition was so important because it has laid the foundation of marine biology and drawn attention of a lot of scientists to this branch. The expedition came back with information that filled 50 reports, including the discovery of 4700 new species. In general, it gave birth to modern science of marine biology and oceanography.

In conclusion, the marine biology science branch has created various of endeavors for scientists to desire and undertake.  I believe that this science branch will grow and be more advance in the future, although it is newly developed.
